A Guide to Dorm Room Essentials

When my son left for college a year ago, I didn't even know where to start. He was moving into a dorm room that was smaller than my closet...and had to share the space! So I researched ways to maximize his space. Here are some of the top ways we did it.

Always go up! Use every inch of space...including the space above things. That includes the desk. A hutch adds much needed extra space.

Make the dorm room feel more like home with a cozy headboard. Just make sure they are for a dorm bed. Most dorm beds are XL Twin. All of these were made for dorm beds, so they will fit.

Storage needs to do double duty. Trunks can not only store out of season clothes, but they can be an extra seat or a coffee table.

Use any space...including under the bed!

My son had a refrigerator in his dorm room. It was perfect for a late night snack. These stations helped keep food neat and organized.

Dorm room mattresses are usually XL Twin. Having a comfortable place to sleep in a must! All of these choices dorm-room approved.

Some dorm sheet sets will come with an extra pocket for an ipad or a phone. My son was in a loft, so this was really practical for him!

Mattresses in dorm rooms usually aren't comfortable. I did purchase a mattress topper for my son.

I love dorm packs that will take the guessing game out of everything! These three come with a hamper and even a trunk! All one purchase and your done. Easy!

Don't forget to personalize the space.

Want to add even more flair...add peel and stick wallpaper! It comes in so many pretty colors and patterns.

Add some fun pillows. The call mom one is my favorite one.
